Island girl in the nation's capital

I'm still alive yo. Fighting extreme jet lag and missing my family. Pictures later. Details to come. I'm glad I'm not on island to witness the election madness. The ride up to San Vicente on my way home last Friday was unnerving enough. Did anyone else get stuck in the traffic?

The natives here are mostly friendly, but in a hurry to get to wherever it is they are going. They are celebrating Halloween with enthusiasm. On the metro last night the college crowd were in full gear, full volume, fully inebriated and exacerbated my claustrophobia greatly (you thought I was gonna say fully?).

Today I sat with the "suits". They are a curious demographic, constantly pacing and on their cell phones. They live mainly on Starbucks. I still cannot tell the democrats from the republicans off the bat, but I am observing them carefully. If anyone knows a quick litmus test for this, please let me know. I may take a few photo samples for research. Also, if anyone would like a postcard, please send me an email. If I find an elderly woman chewing betelnut on the sidewalk next to the United Colors of Benetton, you can be sure I will post it!

I think Friday was the first time I ever experienced "road rage" ha ha...after passing through the Microl intersection and having two kids run up to my car and literally bang on the windows to get me to roll them down and give them a donation, I got stuck in a longggggggg line of traffic at the bottom of San Vicente because one of the candidates thought it would be a great Idea to do his/her road side waving by the round house and caused a huge traffic jam...AGH!

Hate to say it, but the male republicans will have haircuts which closely resemble Tony Jr. Too bad, so sad. If you get a chance to hit the floating fish markets down on Maine Ave., just downstream from the Kennedy Center, you might enjoy it. You may even see a fish from home.

First you have to find a United Colors of Bennetton.

The Republicans are the ones in the black helmets, the red light saber and breathe loudly.

The Democrats are the ones with the kick me sign hunched over for lack of a backbone.

Hi Boni, I'm back online.

The identification parameters you ask for are simpler than Jeff makes it sound over on his blog. The democrat will have his hand a bit deeper into the pocket of the other fellow than the republican. Other than that they are indistinguishable.

One must look closely at what they DO, not what they SAY they will do. The saying part sounds diametrically opposed. They are peas in a pod when it comes to the doing part.

What they both do best is steal from those who produce and give to those who do not, especially themselves, their friends, their political cronies or whomever they think they can buy a block of votes from.

Say hi to Abe for me.

Hello, you don't know me, but Jane had mentioned your blog. I work with her, but before that had lived in DC for 6 years. I love the place, and not many know that it's actually a small town. I would suggest grabbing some food in the Adams Morgan area. Just walk south down 18th Street from Columbia Rd.

After a while, you don't care as much whether the people around you are Republicans or Democrats. An interesting subculture there are the staffers, an enormous group of employees on the Hill, that many try to stay away from, or many embrace. Oh, and DC has one of the highest concentration of attorneys. I think it's something like 1 out 12 people. How's that for a post-Halloween scare. - Omar
